The Sport of Kings

More than 200 years of surfing culture
This tome is the most comprehensive visual history of surfing to date, marking a major cultural event as much as a publication. Following three and a half years of meticulous research, it brings together hundreds of images to chart the evolution of surfing as a sport, a lifestyle, and a philosophy.

The book is arranged into five chronological chapters, tracing surfing culture from the first recorded European contact in 1778 by Captain James Cook to the global and multi-platform phenomenon of today. Utilizing institutions, collections, and photographic archives from around the world, and with accompanying essays by the world’s top surf journalists, it celebrates the sport on and off the water, as a community of 20 million practitioners and countless more devotees, and as a leading influence on fashion, film, art, and music.

An unrivaled tribute to the breadth, complexity, and richness of surfing, this book is a must-have for any serious player on the surfing scene and anybody who aspires to the surfing lifestyle. As one surfing scribe has declared, “There has never been a book like this, and there will never be another one again.”

I’m still not done reading this book!

Holly, October 27, 2021
What an incredible in-depth look at the history of surfing, the only disappointment was that it did include a page or so about The Beach Boys

Gabriel, October 27, 2021
En tant que fan de surf, c'est un classique a avoir dans sa bibliothèque

Ein Must Have für Surf-Fans

Patrick, October 27, 2021
Ein wirklich tolles Buch, das in keinem surfbegeisterten Haushalt fehlen sollte! Macht sich als Deko auch besser als das zerbrochene alte Board an der Wand :)

Original and interesting

Dream away to beautiful places

Leen, October 27, 2021
Surfing by Taschen is the blue version of a black hole: it sucks you away - instantly- to beautiful places and long gone times. One thousand shades of shallow and deep, gentle and perturbating blue water. Instantly taking the winter blues away.

A must for everybody with even a fleeting interest in surfing

Tatu, October 27, 2021
A truly amazing visual history of surfing. Comprehensive, inspiring and educational. I tend to grab it just to flick through some of the wonderful imagery, but always end up reading a chapter or two.

J'adore le parcourir et lire quelques pages régulièrement. Il me permet de m'évader quand je suis à Paris mais aussi c'est un veritable outil quand je cherche des inspirations pour sur des époques du passé.
