A revolution in painting

The mysterious genius who transformed European art
Caravaggio, or more accurately Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), was always a name to be reckoned with. Notorious bad boy of Italian painting, the artist was at once celebrated and controversial: Violent in temper, precise in technique, a creative master, and a man on the run.

This work offers a comprehensive reassessment of Caravaggio’s entire œuvre with a catalogue raisonné of his works. Each painting is reproduced in large format, with recent, high production photography allowing for dramatic close-ups with Caravaggio's ingenious details of looks and gestures.

Five introductory chapters analyze Caravaggio's artistic career from his early struggle to make a living, through his first public commissions in Rome, and his growing celebrity status. They look at his increasing daring with lighting and with a boundary-breaking naturalism which allowed even biblical events to unfold with an unprecedented immediacy before the viewer.

Belle édition

Magnifique ouvrage !

Great despite a couple nitpicks

Benjamin, October 27, 2021
My only two nitpicks are that some text-only pages just leave blank space at the top for no reason, and though I appreciate having multiple presentations of the same painting (full page detail and scaled down full painting on another page) I wish some of the full painting reproductions were larger. Sometimes they feel like a quick reference rather than what I’m supposed to appreciate. I want to add I praise the work of including related works.

Une magnifique immersion

TASCHEN is the best!

David, October 27, 2021
TASCHEN provides an art experience in book form. Within the context of recent limited social interactions at museums, a TASCHEN book can provide a valuable form of learning and appreciation.
The Caravaggio book shows the artist’s work in text form, and as remarkable visual form, presenting the reader with as complete an understanding of the work of one of the great masters of art. Text and detailed photographs combine to assist readers with a thorough examination of this artist's life and work.

Timeless Beauty
