The photographer
Ethan Russell (b. 1945) photographed The Rolling Stones’ 1969 American tour and the making of The Beatles’ final album Let It Be the same year. Russell became interested in photography at the University of California, Santa Cruz, but did not take it up professionally until he moved to London in 1968. He met Mick Jagger in London and from 1968 to 1972 was the Stones’ main photographer. He also shot The Who, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Eric Clapton. Russell’s work has been published in several books including Dear Mr. Fantasy: Diary of a Decade: Our Time and Rock and Roll (1985), Let It Bleed: The Rolling Stones, Altamont and the End of the Sixties (2009).
