C. Legal requirements
The legal requirements result from the Barrier-Free Accessibility Reinforcement Act (BFSG), in particular from Sections 3, 14 BFSG and Annex 3 to the BFSG, with reference to the Ordinance to the Barrier-Free Accessibility Reinforcement Act (BFSGV). According to this, services for people with disabilities must be findable, accessible and usable in the usual way, without particular difficulty and, in principle, without outside help. This means
- Information on the accessibility of the service must be provided, and identification, authentication, security and payment functions must be barrier-free.
- In the case of a visual provision of service, a form of service must be set up that enables use in the absence of or with impaired vision and does not require color differentiation.
- In the case of an auditory provision of services, a form of operation must be set up that enables use in the absence of or with impaired hearing.
- In the case of a manual operating mode, an operating mode must be set up that does not require fine motor control or operation, and the operating elements must be within reach of the user.
- Operating modes that trigger photosensitive seizures should be avoided.
- A form of operation must be set up that includes functions that facilitate and simplify use with cognitive impairments.
- The
privacy of users when using the accessibility functions must be preserved.
D. Status of compliance with the requirements of the BFSG
We are committed to making www.taschen.com accessible to all users. To achieve this, we have implemented various features and continuously improve our website's accessibility in line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1). Our approach is built on the four core principles of accessibility: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, and Robust.
Our key accessibility features and standards include:
Perceivable
- Text alternatives for non-text
content: All images, graphics, and other non-text elements are accompanied
by descriptive alternative text (alt text) so that screen readers and
other assistive technologies can convey the visual content.
- Content & Products: Alt-texts for content elements and product placements are maintained in our Content Management System.
- Listing & Detail Pages: Product tiles use product titles as alt-text. Image sliders are labeled descriptively (e.g., "Image x of y").
- Cart & Mini-Cart: Product images use the full edition titles as alt-text. - Screen Reader Compatibility: The website is designed to be accessible to screen readers, and skip-to-content links enable users to jump directly to the relevant part of the page.
- Sufficient color contrast: We ensure adequate contrast between text and its background.
- Customizable display: Users can adjust text sizes, line spacing, and other visual elements in their browser settings.
- Color is not used exclusively: Color is not the sole means of conveying information, indicating an action, or distinguishing elements.
- Controllable movement and animation: Moving or animated content is controllable or has an option to disable it.
- Information in more than one sensory channel: Important information is available not only visually, but also acoustically (via screen readers) or tactilely (via Braille displays).
Operable
- Keyboard Navigation: The entire
website is fully navigable using only a keyboard.
- Users can access all menus, search functions, selectors, footer content, and product pages.
- All interactive elements, including filters, sorting, pagination, and cart functions, are keyboard-accessible.
- When keyboard navigation is first used, the user is offered a link to jump directly to the main content. - Intuitive navigation and orientation: We provide consistent menu navigation, breadcrumb navigation, and clear headings to help users understand where they are and how to navigate the site.
Understandable
- Readability and understandable language: We strive for clarity and simplicity in our language.
- Predictability and consistency: The website maintains a consistent structure and behavior for links, buttons, and other functional elements.
- Form Controls: All form controls across the website have proper corresponding labels that clearly explain their functionalities. These labels are translated into all relevant languages to ensure universal understanding.
- Descriptive Buttons: All "icon-only" buttons include appropriate aria-label attributes to clearly indicate their function to screen readers. These labels are descriptive of the button's action and are translated into all relevant languages.
- Context and explanations: Where terms or concepts are complex, we provide explanations or glossaries.
- Simple instructions: Instructions for use or interaction are clear and straightforward.
Robust
- Valid and semantic code: We use standard-compliant and valid code (HTML, CSS). Content has the correct semantic HTML markup (for headlines, lists, buttons, etc.) to ensure assistive technologies can interpret it correctly.
- Name, role, value: All user interface components (form fields, buttons, links, etc.) programmatically disclose their name, role (what they are), and current value (e.g., ‘enabled’ or ‘selected’) for assistive technologies. This is done using ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes when standard HTML is not sufficient.
- Compatibility: We follow established standards and best practices to ensure compatibility with current and future browsers and assistive technologies.
