Edgar Degas explored movement and the human form with masterly style and innovative compositions, most famously of dancers, racehorses, and busy streetscapes. Claude Monet was a maestro of light and atmosphere, capturing the fleeting moment with his iconic water lilies and series paintings. Pierre-Auguste Renoir celebrated beauty and sensuality, bringing vibrancy to everyday scenes with lush brushwork and a radiant palette. Paul Gauguin sought inspiration in the exotic, using bold colors and symbolism, often to unsettling effect. Finally, Vincent van Gogh’s highly emotive use of color and vigorous brushstrokes conveyed his private turmoil and did much to lay the groundwork for Expressionism.
Together, these five creative masters redefined what art dared to achieve, emphasizing personal expression alongside their exploration of light, color, and perspective. Their output marked a pivotal shift to modern artistic freedoms and expectations.

Gli autori
Bernd Growe (1950–1992) ha lavorato come storico dell’arte presso la Justus-Liebig-Universität di Gießen, Germania, da 1979 al 1990. Con TASCHEN ha pubblicato una monografia su Edgar Degas.
Christoph Heinrich ha studiato storia dell’arte, teatro e letteratura tedesca a Vienna e a Monaco. Dal 1994 al 2007 ha lavorato presso la Hamburger Kunsthalle, dove è stato nominato curatore della Galerie der Gegenwart nel 1997. Dal 2007 è curatore di arte moderna e contemporanea al Denver Art Museum. È inoltre autore di numerosi scritti sull’arte del Novecento e sull’arte contemporanea.
Ingo F. Walther (1940–2007) è nato a Berlino e ha studiato medievistica, letteratura e storia dell’arte a Francoforte sul Meno e Monaco. Ha pubblicato svariati libri sull’arte medievale e del XIX e XX secolo. I numerosi volumi che ha scritto per TASCHEN comprendono Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, Art of the 20th Century e Codices Illustres.
Matthias Arnold, nato nel 1947, ha scritto la sua tesi di dottorato su Vincent van Gogh. Vive a Monaco e lavora come autore freelance.
Peter H. Feist (1928–2015) studiò storia dell’arte, storia e archeologia a Halle, dove fu assistente tra il 1952 e il 1958, anno in cui si addottorò. Da allora fino al 1981 lavorò presso la Humboldt Universität di Berlino, mentre dal 1982 al 1990 fu il direttore dell’Istituto di estetica e arte dell’Accademia delle scienze della Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, con sede a Berlino Est. Tra i numerosi volumi di storia e teoria dell’arte da lui pubblicati figurano, per TASCHEN, Pierre-Auguste Renoir e, in veste di co-autore, Impressionismo.
