During the opening of “It’s Just a Shot Away: The Rolling Stones in Photographs.” (2014)
The TASCHEN Gallery can look back on a long electrifying history. For just under four years (a good run for a pop-up gallery!), its 6,000-square feet have celebrated the crème de la crème of the TASCHEN program and hosted some of the art, music, and fashion world’s most brilliant luminaries.
In December 2014 the exhibition space kicked off with a bang. Over 10,000 visitors and guests, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jack Nicholson, David Bailey, Pamela Anderson, and David LaChapelle, raised their glasses to the gallery’s first-ever show: “It’s Just a Shot Away: The Rolling Stones in Photographs.” Since then, we’ve come nose to nose with great whites during Michael Muller’s hair-raising “SHARKS”; taken a glam trip with Mick Rock and David Bowie in “SHOOTING FOR STARDUST”; and had another kind of trip during “TASCHEN’s Sixties”. We cooled down with David Hockney’s turquoise hues during his “Bigger Book” retrospective show; and things got hot when we frolicked in Bavaria with lederhosen-clad farm girls for Ellen von Unwerth’s tantalizing “Heimat.” More recently, “KAOS” was wreaked upon Beverly Hills during Albert Watson’s portfolio show, and we fondly looked back on 37 (and a half) years of game-changing books during “A Passion for TASCHEN.”
It’s with great pride and nostalgia that we close this chapter of our pop-up history … but the show must go on! Our stores around the globe will continue to celebrate the best of the TASCHEN universe, from high fashion to counterculture, erotica to fine arts. Stay tuned for more mayhem!
