The renowned submariner, scientist and explorer Don Walsh provides the foreword. Don attracted international attention in 1960, when he and Jacques Piccard descended 10,923 metres to the deepest point in the world. Their record-setting dive aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste took them to the Challenger Deep, at the bottom of the Pacific’s Marianas Trench. Trieste’s descent confirmed once and for all that life exists in even the deepest reaches of the ocean. After leaving the US Navy, Don pursued a career as an oceanographer with a special interest in polar environments, and later he founded International Maritime Inc.
