We are deeply saddened to learn of Peter Lindbergh’s passing on September 3.
Peter Lindbergh’s oeuvre belongs to a world of its own. It would be impossible to put into words the tremendous impact that the legendary German photographer had not only within his field but also in shaping the redefinition of aesthetic standards beyond it. His raw, penetrating portraits in trademark monochrome span myriad guises, softening and shifting our perspective on what beauty is and means. The humanity in his photographs always remains in the foreground and eclipses everything else.
Lindbergh’s celebrated work is part of the permanent collections of many fine art museums and has been presented in prestigious museums and galleries around the world, from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. TASCHEN is honored to have collaborated with Lindbergh on a number of publications. In the introduction of our 2017 monograph Peter Lindbergh: A Different Vision on Fashion Photography, he remarked: “Creation is the birth of something, and something cannot come from nothing. When someone creates something—a painting, a poem, a photograph—the creativity comes from an idea, from a feeling, from emotion, or from a combination of ideas, feelings and emotions that are somehow ‘reborn’ from all our experiences and perspectives.”
We join a great many friends and fans around the world in expressing our sincere condolences to Mr. Lindbergh’s family.
