Sebastião Salgado inducted into the Académie des Beaux-Arts
On Wednesday afternoon, December 6, Sebastião Salgado was officially inducted by Yann Arthus-Bertrand into the photography section of the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts at the Institut de France in Paris. He inherits the place previously occupied by Lucien Clergue who passed away in 2014.
Following his installation, Sebastião Salgado received his sword, an honorary symbol, from the hands of Alain Genestar at a ceremony attended by the Brazilian Ambassador to France, Paulo César de Oliveira Campos, and his Counselor for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Pedro Marcos de Castro Saldanha, as well as Jean-Luc Monterosso, William Klein, Charlotte Rampling and Ségolène Royal among many others. As a member of the Académie for life, Sebastião Salgado will be in a position to advocate even more intensively for the causes that he defends such as the protection of the threatened Amazonian Indian tribes, the recovery of the rain forest in the Bulcão Farm in Aimorés, Brazil, and the preservation of nature and the Earth as a whole.
