Ellen von Unwerth was a supermodel before the term was invented, so she knows a thing or two about photographing beautiful women.
Now available as a standard TASCHEN edition, the famed Fräulein collection brings together some of von Unwerth's favorite images of some of the world's most iconic women, including Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Vanessa Paradis, Eva Mendes, Dita von Teese, Adriana Lima, Carla Bruni, Eva Green, and Monica Bellucci.
With the ability to explore a woman's sexuality like only another woman can, von Unwerth transports us into a wonderland of femininity, playfulness, and fetish. Some subjects flaunt their fantasies with unabashed delight; others are guarded, as if we have stumbled into their secret world. Some images are bright and surreal; others are shadowy and noir. Throughout, von Unwerth celebrates the model's ownership of her sexuality and luxuriant joie de vivre.
Ellen von Unwerth worked as a top fashion model for 10 years, before taking up the camera and becoming one of the world's most in-demand fashion photographers. Her editorial work has featured in countless magazines, including Vogue, Interview, Vanity Fair and i-D, while her major advertising campaigns include Victoria’s Secret, Banana Republic, Guess, Diesel, and Chanel. In 1991 she was awarded first prize at the International Festival of Fashion Photography, and her work was featured in Archaeology of Elegance (2002) and Fashioning Fiction at MoMA/Queens (2004). Her many individual exhibitions include a one woman show at the Hamilton Gallery in London, and her photo-novella Revenge (2003) was accompanied by exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Moscow, and Beijing.
Ingrid Sischy (1952-2015) was a Contributing Editor for Vanity Fair. A former staff writer, photography and fashion critic at The New Yorker, she was editor in chief of Interview, 1989-2008. She has profiled Keith Haring, David Hockney, Jeff Koons, Nicole Kidman, and Madonna, among many others.
"Fräulein captures perfectly von Unwerth’s intimate, playful style, dancing between erotica and kitsch decadence with many of our era’s sexiest female icons such as Claudia Schiffer, Vanessa Paradis, Monica Bellucci, Kate Moss, Britney Spears, Dita von Teese, Adriana Lima, Carla Bruni, Eva Mendes, Eva Green, Christina Aguilera, Lindsay Lohan, and many more."
