Murals of Tibet

Crowdfunding one thousand years of Tibetan masterpieces

June 2019: When Lama Thubten Wangchen, the director of Casa del Tibet in Barcelona, was presented Murals of Tibet – the landmark TASCHEN publication conserving a thousand years of Buddhist mural masterpieces – he immediately started looking for ways to acquire a copy for his foundation.

Established in 1994, Barcelona’s Tibet House is a non-profit organization whose goal is the diffusion of native Tibetan culture in Spain. Through conferences, seminars, and exhibitions, the foundation helps share and preserve Tibet’s rich ancestry despite many of its leaders living in exile.

Casa del Tibet took inspiration from previous financing initiatives and embarked on a crowdfunding campaign to bring the remarkable historical archive to its local community. With the help of this enterprise, artworks that might soon be lost in their physical form and that serve as a permanent monument to Tibetan Buddhist culture were made accessible to future generations of foundation members and visitors.

More about the book
For over a decade, photographer Thomas Laird traveled the Tibetan plateau to capture its ancient murals. He deployed new multi-image digital photography, shooting sections of the murals simultaneously before stitching the images together. The result shows these magnificent works of art true to form for the first time – as wide as ten meters, in blazing color and life-size resolution. The unprecedented collection of Tibetan artworks was meticulously printed and bound in an extra-large, SUMO format book. Limited to 1,000 copies, each book was blessed and signed by his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Every copy is delivered with a modular bookstand designed by Shigeru Ban, plus an illustrated 528-page scholarly companion book.
