TASCHEN Store New York Presents Shot By Kern

On the night of May 16, TASCHEN Store New York, Feature Inc, and VICE hosted Richard Kern in celebration of Shot By Kern. Kern appeared in conversation with Dian Hanson, TASCHEN’s sexy book editor (and cult favorite), to discuss the celebrated photographer’s more than two decade career seeking to unravel and illuminate the complex and often darker side of human nature.

Following the lively discussion, Kern signed his book for guests and admires of his work. Over 300 attendees delighted in wine and sparkling water generously provided Perrier. Noted guests included TASCHEN author Liz Earls, photographer Spencer Tunick, Cool Hunting’s Graham Hiemstra, and New York Magazine’s Miranda Dempster.

Selected Quotations from International Media

"I recently visited New York for the first time, with the intent of seeing as much fine modern art as possible in a mere three days - MoMA, the Met, the Guggenheim, etc. Well, just so you know, the Taschen store in SoHo was also on my list. I loved seeing and touching many of the books up close and personal, many of which I had only seen in your catalogs. There is a world of wonder tucked into that small store on Greene Street. I'm impressed, and I saw a lot of impressive things during my stay.
So, you can consider yourself a giant among the giants of New York.
Sincerely, Mark H."

"TASCHEN, the provocative art book publishing house that doesn't so much make books as perform them, has opened its own store in SoHo, featuring favorite TASCHEN titles, including The Big Book of Breasts and the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities. Designed by Philippe Starck, who created its sisters in Paris and Beverly Hills, it's a glowing, groovy tube of a place, with trippy, Peter Max-like wall murals painted by Beatriz Milhazes, a Brazilian artist, and floating bookshelves that sprout from concrete stalks and have video monitors along the top." — New York Times, New York, United States
"Based in Cologne, Germany, TASCHEN has subsidiaries in London, Paris, Madrid, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. It also has its own bookstores, which it began opening in 1998, in Cologne, Paris and Beverly Hills. This month, New York will finally land on TASCHEN's map, when its fourth bookstore opens on Greene Street in the city's SoHo neighborhood. In a district that has morphed from a once-gritty artists' enclave to a high-end tourist destination with luxury goods purveyors on every block, the store's wares should fit in nicely." — Publishers Weekly, New York, United States
"Benedikt Taschen isn't one for half-measures - as fans of the publishing magnate's comprehensive volumes on Chelsea drag queens, large-breasted women, and heavyweight champs can attest. And the Teutonic titillator has stayed true to form with his first New York store, a trippy collaboration with Philippe Starck." — Style.com, New York, United States
