"[Benedikt] Taschen, for his part, chose Starck to design the store because "I wanted the Sistine Chapel," he says by phone. The space is intended not as "a cold fashion boutique but a place where people like to stay" - and "hopefully buy some books." The store may not be exactly Vatican style, but it will have art across the ceiling-displayed in frames above mahogany, glass and bronze interior that's intended, its promotional material says, to give it an "Old Europe-style" look. When the store opens next month, it will also be the only bookstore in Beverly Hills. Starck envisions it as "the heart and life of intelligence."

“If you've never been to the TASCHEN Beverly Hills store then you are in for a treat. It's just like being a tiny person, like an elf or one of the characters in Toy Story, in the aisle of a library with a giant ice cube hung in the middle of it. The ice cube is actually a frosted glass booth suspended above the main floor with a balcony overlooking the book aisle below where TASCHEN's wonderful over-sized books are on display. Inside the ice cube TASCHEN's famous and celebrated author of the moment stands Evita-like before a clutch of microphones and addresses the crowd of Santa's elves and Buzz Lightyears and Woodys below, their beseeching hands raised aloft with their camera phones just like in the old days you would hold up your Zippo and Bic lighters when the band played "Free Bird". It is too strange and wonderful, and alas, my iPhone camera (the old one, not the one that talks to you) was not up to the task.”

"An opium den of a bookstore, an irresistible emporium for all things excessive and escapist. TASCHEN’s selection appeals to the vicarious, the voracious, and the voyeuristic."

“… boldly step into the TASCHEN store… but leave the young ones at home. This elegantly arranged shop, which feels more like a gallery, is full of pricey, arty, lavish and often naughty books. It might be $ 70 for a copy of Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs, $ 15,000 for a "champ's edition" of the Muhammad Ali tribute volume GOAT (Greatest of All Time) or $ 700 for an appreciation of porn star Vanessa del Rio, promiscuously illustrated.”
