I used often to ponder the distinction between erotica and pornography. Wat it that erotica had artistic merit and porn didn`t? Or that erotica spoke to adult desires and porn to adolescent ones? I could never find a definition that seemed totally adequate. Finally, it dawned on me. If it works, it`s erotica.
Of course, what I`m really doing there is simply to say that the only satisfactory definition is a subjective one. One man`s woman is another woman`s man, or, in quieter periods, each to his own. But does that mean that there is and can be no objective analysis that provides an answer? Well, yes and no. I don`t believe there`s an absolute answer, something that could sit alongside Newton`s Laws of Motion or E=MC² or politicians tell lies. But at least there`s a bit of generalisation that can be done. It`s pretty safe to say that most people will find Roy Stuart`s work more erotic than the shots Wayne took when he got Kelly drunk last weekend. This is not just because Wayne may have been happy with a series of shots that look as though Kelly was waiting to have an IUD inserted. Most people would find Roy Stuart`s work more erotic than that of many other professionals. So Stuart must be hitting the spot for more people. Why? I think it`s because Stuart is well aware that the most important sexual organ is the brain. He knows that the oft-repeated saying that ‘the pictures are better on radio` implies an obvious problem for a photographer, and he knows how to overcome it. The pictures are better on radio because they come from my imagination. Roy Stuart knows how to lure my imagination into his pictures, give it a shot in the medulla and turn it loose. How does he do it? He tells stories. Every single shot is a story, and there`s a story running through his entire oeuvre. OK, I`m a writer so I`m going to fall in love with a story, but you don`t have to be a writer for that to happen. Stories are a basic human need. Stuart knows that and he`s obsessed with stories. That`s why he`s devoting himself to movies from now on. I`m not sure I`ll ever watch one, though. Sorry Roy, but when I look at one of your shots, I don`t want you to say a word. "Effectivement, l'univers de Stuart est très éloigné de celui du porno basique, ce qui n'apparaît pas forcément au premier regard, car l'artiste joue régulièrement avec les clichés du porno (l'initiation de jeunes filles ingénues, le matériel sado-maso...). Mais chez lui, pas de sexes rasés, les femmes affichent une pilosité généreuse ; pas de poitrines siliconées non plus, et puis si les modèles sont en général sexys, on trouve aussi des femmes âgées, enrobées... Au monde glacé et aseptisé du porno, Stuart oppose des photos qui, pour parler crûment, 'sentent le cul': ces images de désir sont si fortes en tension sexuelle, qu'elles donnent presque la sensation de pouvoir humer l'odeur du modèle. En fait, il y a une grande exigence de réalisme chez Stuart, une envie de montrer ce qu'est vraiment le sexe, mais pas non plus d'une manière totalement crue : il s'agit plutôt de 'fantasmes resitués dans une réalité meilleure ou améliorée'. I haven't yet seen Vol.4, however if Vols 1-3 are anything to go by, then I await this with eager anticipation. Roy Stuart captures for me the very essence of voyeuristic knicker fetishism encapsulated in excellent and artistic photography.
