Until then, the readers, mostly born before the 1950s, would stop reading manga in junior high school, as it used to be seen as an entertainment for children. Tezuka developed a more dynamic design, using angles, close-ups, perspective, and cinematic techniques from German and French movies of that time. The comics before him employed a basic 2D representational scheme, as in a theatre play, with actor's entrances from left and right. Tezuka's debut in 1947 with "New Treasure Island" marked a turning point in manga history. The new narrative style fascinated new readers, who kept on reading manga into their adulthood. From then on, the phenomenon has just grown and continues to reach new frontiers.

Even today, most of the manga books are printed in black and white on very cheap paper, yielding a thick book that can be read in couple hours. Such books are read many times over in the train, on the way to the work or school, and left behind after finished. It is not uncommon that a new passenger enters the train, picks up a manga that has been left behind, and reads it to the end. There are also the coloured and premium versions that are not thrown away after being read. These editions are printed mostly in hard cover and in larger formats than the paperback ones, and are archived in private collections.

This book is a showcase of about 140 artists who are not just famous in Japan, but have also innovated, pioneered, inspired and created Anime films as well as many best selling manga titles. The artists are presented with much background information, insights into their creative methods, their contributions to the world of manga, and their excursions into Anime. The book comes also with an area-free DVD, featuring three interviews: with an underground manga artist, a traditional artist, and one currently popular artist. The DVD also contains a manga shop tour in Tokyo, where stores can carry as many as 110.000 different titles. The book is also a travel in time, including artists who have passed away, but whose contributions cannot be forgotten. We hope that the reader will enjoy the journey into the fantastical and dynamic world.
