LaChapelle, Heaven to Hell - Reviews

"What`s impressive about this volume, which has nearly twice the images of either of the last two books, is its demonstration of LaChapelle`s actually quite formidable range. Just when you think you`ve seen one too many balloon-chested, slick-skinned automatons spewing evocative substances around the room, he throws a bevy of cellulite-dimpled middle-aged men, or a herd of taxidermied animals, or a startling bland photo of Hilary Clinton—or an electric chair, just sitting empty with a pair of high heels cast off nearby. The work is garish and gorgeous, shameless and eloquent, repulsive and mesmerizing—but never very far off the mark."

"His colour-saturated, outrageously exhilarating images manage to crash through every possible taster barrier as big-breasted girls and big-bummed guys cavort in set-piece tableaux that memorably highlight our obsessions with sex, violence and celebrity."
Sunday Times, Culture, London
United Kingdom

"The stills are a key player in the telling of the story, and there are some real doozies here. Lavish is hardly the word, with the text more than matching the visuals."
Film Review, London
United Kingdom
"...some of the world's most famous stars and exhibitionists come out to play - including David Beckham as you've never seen him before... The latest example of his extraordinary imagination is a book, Heaven to Hell, a successor to Artists and Prostitutes."
The Saturday Times Magazine, London
United Kingdom
"A riot of colour and kitsch, Heaven to Hell, dissects contemporary pop culture - fame, fashion, gender and glamour - at its apocalyptic prime."
Harpers and Queen, London
United Kingdom
