Taschen's latest book to celebrate the photo-fantasies of helmut newton contains an intriguing combination of the three main themes that Mr. Newton returns to frequently, nudes, portraits and fashion. There's quite a few obscure images that I, a die-hard collector of Newton Imagry, had not seen before. There is a series of collages in the very front of the book that I particularly like...all in yellow-sepia tones, very bizaar , haunting and perversly "chic', his trademark. Another image that was curious was one entitled "marlene Dietrich" date unknown....looked to me like a wonderfully creepy portrait of a lifesize dietrich doll in a studio somewhere in hollywood. There are some other darkly menacing and "controversial" images.....female "dummy" parts in industrial settings, studio nudes in extremely foreshoortened , startling angles....lots of "pussy-in-your-face" confrontational point of view. Of course, his classics from the 60's and 70's are impossible to top...even by Mr. Newton himself....I also liked the good selection of men's portraits...mega powerful men with dubious repute. I've often fantasized of a full length Newton movie....but I realize that his particular strength really, solidly lies in his ability to capture that perfect shock-chic-creepy split second in time that electrifies.BOYWAYUnited States |
