Delta dawn - Jao Camp, Okavango Delta

Most of the land of Botswana is a desert. Yet deep within this fierce aridity lies a wetland, one that obtains its water from rain that falls in central Africa; rain over a thousand kilometres away. At full flood, the channels of the Okavango Delta are fringed with papyrus reeds, and lilies float on its tranquil lagoons. Moving through the waterways in a mokoro - a traditional canoe - is one of the best ways to see the wildlife that teems here. Propelled by boatmen, the canoes slide silently past scenes just waiting to be filmed. The lagoons are home to hippo and crocodile, and the pools of water act as a magnet for thousands of birds. In the midst of this harbour is an oasis, Jao Camp. Secluded under a thick canopy of ancient trees, the whole camp is raised on decks that lift it so that it appears to be floating above the lush palms below. Each of the stylish rooms has thatched roofs with canvas walls. From October to March, the waters of the Delta largely subside and vast plains come into view. This is the time when lions, cheetahs and leopards are more in evidence, on day and night drives.
