"This huge book charts Stanley Kubrick`s progress from indie maverick to establishment hero. It features large-scale movie stills as well as previously unpublished photographs, sketches, and notes from the director`s archive. As a bonus, the first 2500 copies of The Stanley Kubrick Archives includes 12 frames of the epic 2001: A Space Odyssey snipped from a print once owned by the man himself."

"Imposingly dense, wide as a barn door and weighing in at a lap-crushing 15 pounds, TASCHEN`s 545-page The Stanly Kubrick Archives showed up one morning in our offices, where my editor and I circled it like curious apes. Sniffing, we found it odorless; this is not a tome of gossip about the director`s rumored helmet-clad crash paranoia, late-night faxing to Stephen King or other mysterious behavior. Diving in, I devoted several hours. Did I ultimately evolve? Undoubtedly."

"A cinema coffee-table book to end all cinema coffee-table books, The Stanley Kubrick Archives, edited by Alison Castle, offers readers an unprecedented look inside the director`s creative process. It provides sketches, notes, and an almost unbelievable stash of other behind-the-scenes material―just the stills from the shot-but-never-seen War Room pie fight originally intended as the climax for Dr. Strangelove would be considered worth the hefty price tag by some aficionados. But you get much more: scholarly essays, a CD featuring an audio interview with Kubrick, and, if you buy the first printing, 12 frames from Kubrick`s personal 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It`s also one of the most beautifully designed and laid out books of this or any year."

"Put down TASCHEN`s stunning new tribute to Stanley Kubrick? I`m afraid we can`t do that, Dave. Granted full access by the estate of director Stanley Kubrick, editor Alison Castle has put together The Stanley Kubrick Archives, a mammoth insight into movies such as Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, and The Shining. Taken from Kubrick`s personal collections, the book contains 800 film stills scanned from the original reels, on-set photography, interviews, essays, pages from screenplay drafts, information on unfinished projects and much more. The coolest part? Every copy in the first-print run includes a 12-frame strip from a 70mm print of 2001 owned by Stan himself―making this package the collector`s item of all collector`s items."

"The challenge of reviewing this book is figuring out how to describe it: massive, lavish, comprehensive, staggering? All of those words apply. Alison Castle, who also edited Taschen`s formidable coffee-table book on Some Like it Hot, has worked with Kubrick`s widow Christiane and the Kubrick estate to compile what may be the most extraordinary film book ever published, certainly the most exhaustive tribute to a director ever attempted."

"Stanley Kubrick Archives embraces his cool, epic style. It's as comprehensive and weighty as you would hope from a book that costs £100, is 544 pages long and can barely be lifted with both hands.( ) And seeing the worlds-historic, futuristic, dystopic-of whose reality he so meticulously convinced us, recast here as mere movie sets is an unsettling, enriching experience for the deep-pocketed Kubrick devotee."

"Its immense, imperious, deep-pocketed devotees will be rewarded with a prime piece of "Kubrickiana" -collectors and fans alike will be particularly enticed with the inclusion of an original 12-frame, 70mm film strip from "2001 Space Odyssey"-ultimately leaving all books on the man firmly under its (considerable) shadow."
