“This book is simply incredible. Slightly oversized, printed on slick color packing paper, TASCHEN lives up to their stellar reputation by publishing this fantastic book. F.X. Feeney was challenged by Michael Mann, something he had to accept in order to get the filmmaker's participation and has risen to the challenge by writing an outstanding book where he shares his fascinating insight into one of my three favorite directors. I learned a tremendous amount of information from this book and I was thrilled reading every page. The photos and information Michael Mann supplies amazed me. Seeing photos from his early work as well as behind the scenes from his feature films gave me quite a bit of pleasure. More important was hearing Mr. Mann's philosophical approach to directing and how he tackled each of his films. You'll be very surprised on discovering his reasons for making each of his films because I know I was. Every film Michael Mann has made so far is looked at. Gorgeous stills, storyboards and even Michael Mann's private notes are on full display. The only thing that disappointed me was when I finished reading the last page of this book. "Comme toujours dans les ouvrages édités par TASCHEN la partie iconographique est remarquable. A la qualité des tirages s’ajoute l’intérêt des documents et leur rareté. Michael Mann a ouvert ses archives à Paul Duncan qui en a rapporté des trésors, tels les clichés pris par le photographe Gusmano Cesaretti à la prison de Folsom pour la préparation de Comme un homme libre (1979) ou les feuillets annotés du découpage technique d’Ali (2001). L’album offre aussi une impressionnante collection de photos de Mann sur ses plateaux, et bien sûr de magnifiques images tirées de ses films eux-mêmes, qui témoignent du sens de l’espace et du soin porté aux éclairages par le réalisateur. Toutes ces beautés, qui à elles seules légitimeraient l’achat de ce premier livre édité en français sur Mann, ne doivent pas nous faire négliger la qualité du texte. Grand amateur du cinéaste, le critique américain F.X.Feeney aborde sa filmographie dans l’ordre chronologique, à l’exception des séries télévisées regroupées en un seul chapitre riche d’informations rares. Si parfois Feeney n’évite pas la paraphrase des films en détaillant leurs péripéties, la précision de ses descriptions, qui s’attachent toujours aux choix de mise en scène, rend l’ensemble très agréable à lire. Ses analyses sont entrecoupées des commentaires de Mann, avec lequel il s’est entretenu longuement et qui avait un droit de regard sur le livre."Positif, ParisFrance |
