3D media is now gaining momentum and is sure to be the medium of the next generation of computer graphics. The techniques and the technology of making characters using 3D software are much more complex than using 2D. But as the technology becomes more accessible there will be endless possibilities. Games, movies, presentations, architecture and much more will be taken to another phase of production and interaction. 3D allows artists to create infinite characters, keeping full control of their creation and playing with them when they are done. Nearly everything is possible with CG - and this may just be the beginning.

This publication is a statement about the digital progress that has taken place in computer graphics since the 1980s. Almost 100 artists enrich Digital Beauties with their creations, in more than 500 pages of illustrations on the theme of the female form. The variety of techniques and routes to creation are apparent in the abundant variations of the finished art. Printing these images in book form brings another dimension to many artists and their artwork, as they have, until now, for the most part used the Internet to exhibit their pieces. Thanks also to the net it is possible to sample such art from around the world and highlight how cultures express themselves differently, even with the same available tools. The anime and manga culture in Japan, the entertainment industry in the US, the romanticism of Europe, all contribute to making art different in each region and country. Computer graphics are not narrowing the possibilities, but expanding them, and helping creative people to find common interests with other like-minded individuals in other parts of the globe. Moreover, the Internet has allowed thousands of artists to talk to each other, share experience and share the works they create. In the 3D communities on the Web, you can download clothing, accessories, and other accoutrements and add them to your artwork. Not just for computer fans, the characters are becoming part of everyday commerce.

Digital Beauties is not a technical "how to" book. It is an inspirational guide to the digital creation of feminine subjects. It has very rich information on how artists from all around the world created their masterpieces. This information is not as technical as a software command; rather, it is a signpost for creative exploration.
