Manga Design - Reviews

"Masanao Amano's new megaguide, Manga Design, celebrates the many subgenres (from lighthearted action and romantic comedy to historical fiction and erotic horror) and profiles more than 100 artists (including Spirited Away's Hayao Miyazaki and Astro Boy's Osamu Tezuka). As you'd expect, it's loaded with graphics, too: Manga Design packs 1,000 covers into 576 pages. If that's not enough, pop in the accompanying DVD for a tour of Tokyo's largest manga store."

Manga Design is great to have as reference because of the huge amount of page samples (from 135 artists). It gives you a good overview of the diverse styles of manga.

However, although the material is invaluable, the presentation is filled with flaws.

To begin with, there are a lot of misses. The Japanese names and titles are transcribed using random systems (e.g. "o"/"oh"/"ou" for the extended Japanese "o"), and misspelled in several places. Several sample pages appear under the wrong artist, and at least one sample page appear in two places (one is under the correct artist).

But the biggest flaw is the overall design. For example, for some reason, the artists are sorted by Japanese syllables (a, i, u, e, o, ka, ki, ku...) instead of alphabetically, and there is no alphabetical index. Also, the page numbering is very strange and placed in the least readable place. And although there is information about each page sample, this information is not placed next to each picture, but in the end of the book (without reference to page numbers).

This book needs traditional page numbering, an alphabetical index of the artists and the manga titles and clear source information by each page sample.

More extensive lists of titles for each artist would also be nice, at least covering all of the titles used for page samples. And a foreword shedding some light on the project of making the book would be helpful: e.g. what is the reason for the unusual design, and what was the nature of the collaboration with the Japanese author and the editor?

I never thought that there would be that much infomation on my favorite artists. It's manga seen in a different way.If I have to pick a number from 1 to 10, then thsi would be a 8.I wouldn't rate it any higher because there has been some pictures repeated in the format. As for learning about the manga-ka in general,I have to say that this book was worth buying...just for the information quality alone.

"La verdadera sorpresa se produjo el año pasado, cuando la prestigiosa editorial TASCHEN-conocida por su biblioteca sobre grandes nombres del arte- daba a luz la obra teórica más ambiciosa hasta la fecha: Manga Design".

A great selection of manga artists, and I appreciate the fact that the manga excerpts were kept in the original Japanese, but the French and English translations are -terrible- (I don't speak German but am fluent in Japanese). I would give an example, but you can sincerely open the book to -any- page and see for yourselves.

The most disappointing book I have ever paid retail price for. Cheaply bound, appalling slapdash page layout, slipshod typesetting not to mention the tedious and error filled English translation. Why are the reproduced comicbook pages laid out so that the panels merge together (4 to a page) or disappear off the page? What, if any, is the ordering sequence for the artists listed? Why is there no listing of which books these sample pages are taken from? Why are there no translations of the titles of the covers reproduced? 900 or so covers reproduced on the DVD with no title or artist information, let alone original publication date. The cheap DVD sleeve was glued onto the rear inside cover, upside down, and has a sticky flap that immediately attached itself to the back page whilst trying to remove the disc. I could go on but haven't the patience. After purchasing assorted Taschen books over the years I had been led to expect a definitive reference work of exceptional quality, now I can't believe I wasted the money. I will never buy a shrink wrapped book in a store again.

Manga is a more fantasy-based drawing. Compared to Anime, Manga is sort of Shojo than Shonen.
