"This reprint is made from the National Library of Vienna's complete, coloured gold-heightened copy, thus assuring the best possible detail and quality. The book's introduction, by the University of Utrecht's Peter van der Krogt, discusses the historical and cultural context and significance of the atlas; Krogt provides detailed descriptions of the maps, allowing modern readers to fully appreciate Blaeu's masterwork."

"After the first modern world atlas was published, in 1570, Dutch printers vied to produce ever more extravagant books filled with maps, illustrations, and lyrical descriptions of far-flung climes, from the New World to the Far East. The most lavish of all was Joan Blaeu`s Atlas Maior of 1665, with eleven volumes, 3,000 pages, and nearly 600 maps. It was the most expensive book in existence—the ideal possession for a prosperous trader with the whole world in his hand. In Taschen`s sumptuous (and, thankfully, abridged) version, the most striking features—aside from the sheer size of the thing—are fanciful details like Pharaoh`s army drowning in the Red Sea and the occasional terra incognita, including the vast blank of the American heartland."

The famous Dutch cartographer Joan Blaeu described how maps permit us to know what is going on in other lands and faraway places. This reference book reproduces some of the geographical images et designs executed by Blaeu in 1665. Discover what the world looked like in the 17th century. 700 pages, grand format."

"TASCHEN have pulled all the stops here, reproducing the first ever widely circulated atlas. Less as coffee-table book, more an actual coffee table, this monumental tome, resplendent in exquisite maps and magnificent illustrations, is a feast for the eyes... A book to be cherished for generations."
