"This staggering, gorgeous reprint – in English, German, and French – reprises a collection of maps, created by Dutch cartographer Blaeu. Language is irrelevant, though, and obviously accuracy isn`t even the point. ‘It would be wonderful indeed if any man knew everything about humanity,` muses Joan Blaeu in his translated introduction. Even in its original Dutch, Atlas Maior is enthralling, full of stunning illustrations and old-fashioned maps of the known world destined to enchant."

"A colossal undertaking when it appeared in 1665, the Atlas Maior was the largest, most expensive book of its time, and it`s still a stunner in this splendid reprint."

"A few centuries ago, said Men`s Vogue, a ‘prosperous trader` wouldn`t be caught dead without a copy of Joan Blaeu`s ‘lavish` Atlas Maior. At 11 volumes and 3,000 pages, this Dutch masterwork was the most expensive book in existence,` filled with elaborately illustrate maps and ‘lyrical descriptions of far-flung climes.` Taschen has trimmed 2,400 pages from the experience, but the publishers new reproduction is still ‘the ultimate gift for any map connoisseur, `said Jeffrey Brotton in London`s Royal Academy Magazine."

"The reprint of The Atlas Maior is stunning: it`s a massive 42-centimeters high and its colorful, hand-drawn maps are printed on heavy paper. Truly a tribute to one of history`s finest atlases."

"In its original edition 340 years ago, the Atlas Maior was among the first collections of maps since the 2nd Century to illustrate geography in a new, literal, and detailed way. Elephants and apes, armadillos and sea monsters cavorted across its pages. Ships set sail on parchment seas and script scattered over all surfaces in such flourish as to be illegible. Those who pay $200 to own the book`s new edition today will find places that aren`t around anymore, or at least not as they were 34 decades ago. I dare you to find Kremlenagrad, Bohemia, Mandinga, Persia, Magellanica, New Spain, or the Costa de Cafres in any contemporary atlas."

"The largest and most expensive book published in the 17th century is one of the largest and most expensive gift books published in time for the Christmas season 2005―Atlas Maior of 1665, prepared and published by the Dutch cartographer Joan Blaeu. The 593-pages reprint a hand-colored copy of the atlas that is in the national library of Austria; it is gorgeous, heavy, and fascinating."

"The Atlas Maior of 1665 is a stunningly lavish reproduction of Joan Blaeu`s masterwork (950,000 copperplates were used in making the original editions published in Latin, French, Dutch and Spanish)."

"Gigantissime, sublimissime! Cet atlas achevé en 1662 nous invite à parcourir d`anciennes contrées, une terre d`autant plus attachante qu`elle n`est pas encore tout à fait la nôtre. Atlas de référence pendant plus d`un siècle, il est l`un de ces ouvrages rares et précieux à offrir ou s`offrir, que l`on soit bibliophile, historien, géographe, passionné ou même néophyte."
