Caravaggio - Reviews

I, too, used this fantastic softcover, as a companian to the marvelous biography, "M."
What I enjoy most about it is the quality of paper and size. Art books usually have an awkward shape to them, but this book does not. My only revision would be to have all paintings on separate pages and not in double page spreads. Otherwise, another excellent book on the master/destroyer of painting by the ever-professional, Taschen. Carmelo CucchiCanada |

Excellent book. It became a constant comapnion as I read the massive Caravaggio biography, "M" by Peter Robb.I did discover, however, that the painting on page 80, "Saint Mary Magdalene in Ecatasy" is a copy and not the original. This painting was copied many times, often poorly. This is a poor copy, bad anatomy, poor expression, and poorly painted. Merisi, in his worst day, would not have painted this. I don't understand why the publisher chose this painting when the original is known and available. Also, If we are to give Michelangelo Merisi his due, we need to stop focusing so much on is noteriety, and start focusing on how he single-handedly change art, and the art of painting forever.
I would liked to have seen "The Supper at Emmus" (p.58-9) on one page, and maybe compared with the 2nd version. Richard McNeillUnited States |
