Vermeer - The Complete Paintings

Vermeer's record of the tasks and duties of women

The 35 paintings that have come down to us from the hand of Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) place him beside Rembrandt and Frans Hals as one of the great masters of the golden age of Dutch art.

Most of his pictures (all of which are reproduced in this book) show women about their daily business. Vermeer records the tasks and duties of women, the imperatives of virtue under which their lives were lived, and the dreams that provided the substance of their contrasting counter-world.

I buy one Taschen book on artists every week and this week I bought the one on Vermeer. I can simply comment on the fact that Prof. Dr. Norbert Schneider has sucessfully conveyed each aspect of the Dutch master's art making each page more interesting than the previous one. Personally I always admired Vermeers paintings but found them quite simple and naive. After reading this book I have come to the conclusion that the symbolism of Vermeer's paintings so vividly explained and simplified by the author so that everyone can get a clear idea of what it's all about,is breathtaking. Wonderfully written.
