Leni Riefenstahl - Africa - Reviews

"A big, black Mercedez-Benz of a book.... Ideology aside, the pictures are hard to resist, combining all the voyeuristic pleasures of National Geographic-style anthropology with an unequivocal appreciation of the innate grace and symmetry of the human form... Riefenstahl`s photographs preserve a mythic vision of this Eden before the fall, a romantic lost world, captured in images as powerfully seductive as the artist herself."
V Magazine, Los Angeles

Intermingled bodies, taut muscles, scars: this is a vibrant homage to the sometimes brutal beauty of the ethnic groups of the Sudan. Controversial artist Leni Riefensthal left us these fascinating images of a vanished world."

Wonderful tribute to Leni. A magnificent book for a "now impossible to achieve" photographic material. Trully the best gift to a bibliophile for this season: A GIFT FOR LOOKING AND PRESERVING. A COLORFULL "IN MEMORIAM" FOR LENI RIEFENSTAHL.

Ms. Riefenstahl never ceases to amaze.
Although she was viseable and famous in a Germany that came to a clamerous end in 1945,Leni Riefenstahl survived every attempt to stifle her creations, including the film "Olympia" ,that is argueably the greatest movie, if not documentary ever made.
That everybody who was alive in "her time" is gone is not near the point here. She continues to create because she continues to reach.
I thought when I saw a movie about Leni when she was 80 or 90, that the way she kept up her creativeefforts was enough to make you cry.
I mean here was this old lady for crying out loud.
We saw fleeting glimpses of this Africa work in that movie, mixed in with a tabloid track, amounting to the filmaker asking the question "what was AH really like", six different ways.
"Africa" from these thumbs here, is incredible; an astounding journey, the masters hand in a different era and place, unexpected and overwhelming.
To me the pictures of Africa have a clear signature of someone whose work is familiar.
The discovery is like the opening notes might be of Beethovens 10th Symphony or something. I'm glad Ms. Riefenstahl lived long enough to see Africa published.
Taschen should have a layaway plan.
Maybe Taschen should have a mass marketing plan.
This remarkable work should be made available to the world

"Africa is the crowning achievement of nearly 40 years of picture-taking on the African continent. ..The reproductions, as you'd demand for this sort of money, are nothing less than breathtaking."
