Taschen has published a valuable book and offended potential buyers all at once. The promotional blurb assures us that even though no men are included, it still has merit, thereby obviating the immediate selling point that it is a book about women and their art. There are books published about male artists who are puerile, self-serving, and offensive, while some of the most exciting, informative, and important artists of the 20th and 21st century produce work that is virtually undocumented and unavailable in print. It was difficult not to be disappointed at some of the omissions. There is a huge vacuum and Taschen's apology is unwarranted. That this is one of the better works about women artists is our good fortune. That another book of equal weight and substance is needed is correspondingly obvious.TRICIA BAYMANUnited States |
