"Photographer Peter Beard is one of those men other men want to be. His story, in case you`re not familiar: Born in 1938. Attended Yale. Published several books on man`s mistreatment of Africa. Photographed beautiful women, naked or nearly so, in exotic locations for fashion magazines. Discovered Iman on the streets of Nairobi. Stole Cheryl Tiegs from her husband. Hung out with Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger at Studio 54. Watched countless sunsets over the Kenyan plains. Nearly died when an elephant gored and sat on him in 1996. Beard documented his life in giant collage-and doodle-filled diaries; this month TASCHEN publishes large chunks of them in a 576-page volume."

"Peter Beard: The Art Edition, a three-piece set, doesn't come cheap: $2,500. This signed and numbered limited-edition (2,250) is the autobiography of the 68-year-old diarist, author and photographer as told through a collection of his works. The main volume has 616 pages, measures nearly 14 by 20 inches, and is leather-trimmed. A specially designed wood book stand is included. The third part of the set is a smaller companion book that contains an index, captions, and interview with Beard."

"Peter Beard has spent his life documenting wildlife in Africa. He witnessed the dawn of Kenya`s population explosion and the scramble for finite resources it created; he watched as tens of thousands of starving elephants in Tsavo died in a wasteland of eaten trees. Documenting what he saw with diaries, photographs, and collages, he did not shrink from harsh reality—elephant corpses were laid bare, and the facts were carefully written down in type, by hand, and occasionally in blood. Compiled for the first time, Beard`s massive body of work will be released by TASCHEN as a striking collector`s edition, signed by the author and crafted with its own clamshell case and wooden stand. His collages are reproduced at the size they have always meant to be seen, some as foldouts. Hundreds of smaller-scale works fill the remaining spreads that are magnified to show every detail, from Beard`s own handwriting and drawings to stones, bones and bits of animals pasted to the page."

"With friends such as Andy Warhol, Jackie O. and the Rolling Stones, Peter Beard has lived a life of which many dream. This book includes over 600 images of Beard`s revered collages. Each has been reproduced in its original size on foldout pages to enhance the intricate detail and beauty each work exudes. The book comes housed in a clamshell box and includes a wooden display stand. Ladies and gentleman, this is as luxe as it gets."
