Albertus Seba's Cabinet of Natural Curiosities - Reviews

wieder benutzen.

"Seba's Cabinet of Curiosities is perhaps one of the all-time greatest accomplishments in the study of natural history."
Showboats International Magazine, Fort Lauderdale

“Albertus Seba, a pharmacist and naturalist, commissioned illustrations of his rare fossil, plant, and animal collection in the eighteenth century, and they’ve lost none of their power to delight.”
Martha Stewart Living, New York

What a happy man I am: only since the midst of the last week of 2005 I noticed a specimen of the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities from Seba. Today I went back to the bookstore, shopping for New Year's gifts and saw that the book was for sale for a third of the official price.
I had already seen Seba's calendar and lots of other "pictures" from his Cabinet, written in the 18th century and had read quite some reviews about this work. I have not hesitated for a second to take the work out of the shelves with some shame (shame on the bookstore for sure!) being able to buy this marvel: a bargain price.

Being a bibliophile too (at house I have 5 different libraries) I spent the rest of the afternoon, up until 03.00 am looking, examining and reading this MASTERPIECE of Natural Curiosities. It is to me one of the 10 most wonderful, beautiful books I have ever seen in my whole life, gathering books for about 45 years now already. Content, the colorful precisive drawing of Seba, the exquisite reprint by TASCHEN and the attractiveness that hangs like an aura around Seba's work are the main reasons why one cannot elsehow but give this exquisite book the highest rating of quality and beauty. A masterpiece - as I wrote above - because of the perfect balance between science and art. Another work by TASCHEN that brightens up the libraries of the most demanding collectors and bibliophiles. Thank you TASCHEN for another extremely powerful, precious and exquisite reprint of a rare book, worth many times the price for which you have given the opportunity a rare specimen that we will take back in our hands and under our eyes for the rest of our lives without ever losing the surpise, the amazement of this jewel.

"You know you`re a stylist if you have two or more of these accent pieces that show up again and again in magazines…. a little offbeat, decidedly gorgeous and massive―Cabinet of Natural Curiosities is art for the coffee table."
Domino Magazine, New York

Frequently you want to take a glamps in it again, to make sure that you get well informed as well amused by it. Something the dutch can be proud off, as well as Taschen. Great job!
