Leonardo da Vinci - The Complete Paintings and Drawings - Reviews
"Leonardo da Vinci - The Complete Paintings and Drawings is the best book for 2006, for the investigation of this Italian painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, scientist and all-around genius. Also don't miss it if you still have questions about 'The da Vinci Code' and would like to prepare for the movie."Movie Web, TokyoJapan |

"...surprising revelations on Da Vinci's penchant for hiding codes in his paintings will lead the reader to search out renowned artistic icons as The Mona Lisa, The Madonna of the Rocks and The Last Supper. The Last Supper holds the most astonishing coded secrets of all and, after reading The Da Vinci Code, you will never see this famous paintings in quite the same way again, and here is the most recommendable book, Frank Zöllner's Leonardo da Vinci- The Complete Paintings and Drawings. The book is considered as the most perfect book introducing da Vinci's all works. In scholarly terms, Professor Zöllner`s book is the most precise and most profound catalogue of Leonardo paintings ever written. More importantly, the methodological approach is radically different from previous books. Leonardo is not seen as the usual lone rider standing outside any kind of tradition. Thus paintings such as portraits are seen as examples of a particular type of Renaissance portraiture, questions of social history or gender stereotypes are also discussed. Some particular points are new as far as iconography is concerned. Thus I have discovered that Leonardo`s S Gerome follows a particular type of this painting which is directly based on S Gerome`s letter to Eustochium and its description of penitence. For the first time it is noticed that Leonardo`s Madonna of the Rocks is based on the type of the so-called Madonna of the Frock. Also for the first time, the context of the Last Supper is analyzed in depth: It turns out that the grouping of the Apostles follows the shape of the lunette above and is thus bound to a genealogical program of Ludovico Sforza which runs around the whole refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie. New is also the analysis of the political iconography of the Battle of Anghiari and the reading of Saint John the Baptist as one of several paintings of this subject at the court of Pope Leo X. (alias Giovanni de` Medici) dealing with the iconography of the divine light which shines on this Pope. The book also features the best survey of Leonardo`s drawings, divided in seventeen chapters, and it has all the major documents about Leonardo`s career as in artist, both in the original language and in translation. We also appreciate Professor's comment on da Vinci Code saying 'Browns book is a novel, pure fiction, not in any way an opinion about who Jesus Christ or other persons of the New Testament may have acted. 90% of Brown's interpretations of Leonardo and his paintings are pure nonsense.', and whichever you believe in, we should say Leonardo da Vinci - The Complete Paintings and Drawings is worth enough to buy."Eiga Book, TokyoJapan |

I think that Leonado da Vinci drew his self in the Monalisa. Because he belived thet boys and girls have a little bit of both. I'm a thid grader leaning about the Monalisa in art class.cassidy age 8United States |

Leonardo Da Vinci was a faithful man. he loved to paint the most and let everyone see what he really ment about his paintings.
I'm doing a research paper on Leonardo Da Vinci but I can't find nothing about him being a sculpture but everything talks about is how He loved to paint and about all his paintings. And how he was a scientist and an inventor. Nicole RubianesUnited States |
