"This is a big book. It's a big book in every way, first of all physically. It weighs 15 pounds. The pages are 12 inches high and 16 inches wide. There are 592 pages, with four columns of print on each page. The paper is high quality, heavy and glossy, ideal for photographs, and there are hundreds of them - production stills, portraits and reproductions from Bergman's notebooks... Most of all, the book's success is tremendous. The Ingmar Bergman Archives presents no less than the totality of Bergman's life work. As such, it's not a book to be read just once, but rather it's a companion for a lifetime's worth of viewing. It covers not only his films but also his lifelong stage career and his numerous productions for television. This is appropriate, as many of Bergman's actors came from the stage and established their bond of trust with him through their work together in the theater and television... "A cinéaste hors norme ouvrage hors catégorie. Kubrick avait eu droit à ses "Archives" TASCHEN ; Bergman, un an après sa mort, est à son tour "archivé" avec un mastodonte à deux têtes qui nécessite quelque explication. Le premier volume, six kilos sur la balance, superbement illustré, propose les textes en anglais; par ailleurs, une grosse brochure de 210 pages très serrées, sans images, présente, brut de brut, tous ces textes en français. Interviews fleuves avec le cinéaste - on conseille l'entretien vif-argent de Charles Samuels du 10 novembre 1971, où Bergman s'écharpe pendant deux heures avec le journaliste - , réflexions de ses acteurs et collaborateurs - dont le long témoignage sans fard de Liv Ullmann, qui raconte l'île de Farö, découverte par Bergman sur le tournage de "Persona" - rappels biographiques, analyses des films, journal de tournage...tout y est ou presque. Voici un florilège qui pourrait esquisser un portrait: "Quand j'étais enfant, je souffrais d'une privation totale de mots. En conséquence, je jouais avec mon théâtre de marionnettes."
